Book Overview:

https://www.zanderwhitehurst.com/micro-books/typography

The first book in my micro book series. 64 pages packed with actionable typography learnings. Understand categories, families, terms, performance, purpose, size, weight, hierarchy, pairing, and styles.

Includes FREE Typography design kit for Sketch, and Adobe XD

Chapter Overview

1. Type categories

Categories make selecting fonts a little easier. Each category has a specific characteristic.

2. Type style

Similar to handwriting, fonts have different base styles. My handwriting sadly doesn’t have any style.

3. Type terms

There are 5 key horizontal lines to remember when selecting a font. Next time you smack ’T’ in your favored design tool, test yourself on these terms.

4. Type selection

The lazy approach to selecting typography for your product is to select a trendy top 10 web font of the month. This goes against every rule of designing products for people.

5. Type alignment

There is two axes on a device to consider. Inline and block. Inline is left to right and block is vertical top to bottom.

6. Type hierarchy

Consistent hierarchy is one of the hardest skills in product design. Define hierarchy early.

7. Type weight

As you’ll learn in type performance, you should select a limited number of font weights to reduce the load time.

8. Type Pairing

The key to pairing fonts is contrast which naturally defines a hierarchy in your UI. Your choice of font pairs should come down to accessibility and purpose.

9. Type Performance

Sadly, when it comes to converting your mockups into a real application you need to be mindful of how fonts will perform across browsers.
